Masonry chimneys rely on a concrete crown at the top of the chimney stack to redirect rain, snow, and ice away from the chimney, preventing water damage. However, poor construction, exposure to the elements, and natural wear and tear can cause crowns to crack or deteriorate, allowing moisture to seep in and cause costly damage.

Improper Slope & Overhang – A well-built crown should be slightly sloped to allow water to run off. It should also extend beyond the chimney’s edge to prevent water from dripping onto the masonry and flashing.

Weak or Thin Construction – Some crowns are made with common mortar instead of durable cement, making them more susceptible to water damage. If too thin, they wear down quickly, allowing moisture to penetrate.

Cracking & Water Damage – Even well-built crowns can develop small cracks. If left untreated, moisture enters and expands during freezing temperatures, worsening the damage and leading to major leaks.
